The Dangers of Chemical Deodorants


If you look at the ingredients on your antiperspirant deodorants, you may not recognize or be able to pronounce them.  They are added in there to prevent wetness and control odor.  The active ingredient in most deodorants is Aluminum Ziconium Tetrachlorohydrex gly and Propylene Glycol, these have some surprising side effects to watch out for.  You should always read the ingredients of everything that you buy, even in some natural deodorants.  I purchased a more natural deodorant the other day, and did not read the label because it said “natural” on it.  BIG mistake on my part, I should heed my own advice!  It had Propylene Glycol in it and Boy was I surprised!!

 

SIDE EFFECTS OF ALUMINUM ZICONIUM TETRACHLOROHYDREX GLY

 

1.  A skin irritant, a poisonous neurotoxin that accumulates in your body

 

2.  Aluminum has been linked to breast cancer, when it is absorbed it can disrupt our delicate hormonal balance.  This can lead to an estrogen sensitive cancer.  It can also lead to early puberty in children.  Aluminum blocks toxins from escaping through the armpits, causing them to accumulate in the lymph nodes near the breast.  When can result in an estrogen sensitive cancer.  Our bodies have lymph nodes that run throughout our bodies to detox, and release toxins.  So when we block our sweat glands, they cannot release the toxins and have no where to go, but to stay inside our bodies. 

 

3.  Increased risk of Alzheimer’s Disease

 

SIDE EFFECTS OF PROPYLENE GLYCOL

 

1.  It can damage the central nervous system, liver, heart, and can cause kidney damage.

 

2.  Chronic exposure can cause gastrointestinal disturbances, nausea, vomiting, headaches, and central nervous depression.

 

Propylene Glycol is used to soften cosmetic products because it has a slick consistency, for ease in gliding it on. It also keeps substances from drying out and was originally developed as an anti-freeze.  It is also found in some processed foods, shampoos, conditioners, cosmetics, and leave-in styling products.

 

When we sweat, we produce bacteria buildup under our arms, then it results in offensive odor.  Especially if you eat spicy foods, also onions and garlic.  Our arm pits do not get exposed to air too much, we can’t walk around with our arms up all day, LOL  ; )

 

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO STOP EMBARRASSING ODOR

 

Avoid eating spicy foods, Caffeine, alcohol , processed foods including onions and garlic

Take B Vitamins and Vit C, these encourage the elimination of toxins through urine.

Magnesium – when you have low levels of magnesium it contributes to sweating and body odor. When you take magnesium, take it with calcium because your body will absorb it better.

 

FOODS THAT HELP REDUCE SWEATING AND ODOR

1.  Drink lost of water, it will keep your internal body temperature lower

 

2.  Cook with olive oil to encourage digestion.  You will sweat less when your body does not have to work as hard to move food through the digestive system.

 

3.  Season your food with sage, or you can make it into a tea.  You can purchase a large tea ball.  By drinking and eating sage will reduce the activity of your sweat glands over time.

 

If you type in “How to make your own natural deodorant” into your search engine, you will find a host of recipes that may or may not help.  Everyone has a different chemistry make-up, so what might work for you, it may not work for me.  I found this one and thought that it might just work.  I have not tried it yet, but I will.

Mix equal parts of all 3 ingredients:  Coconut oil, Cornstarch, and Baking soda  Then apply

You can soak a cotton ball with apple cider vinegar and apply it to your arm pits.  Let it dry then mix a 50/50 mixture of cornstarch and baking soda to absorb moisture.  The apple cider vinegar is an antiseptic to kill bacteria.  I have not tried these yet, but will give it a good go.

You can purchase an all-natural deodorant, just read your ingredients.  They will cost you about $4 to $8, find one that will last a long time and stop odor and wetness.  I am still looking for a good one that works well, I will tell you all!

You can buy crystal body deodorants, they are made out of mineral salts called “Allum” not to be confused with aluminum zirconium (which can be absorbed by the skin). 

Crystal body deodorant is fragrance and chemical free, and lasts a very long time!  It won’t stop perspiration, but it will prevent odor by inhibiting bacterial growth.  You would just wet it and apply it, then let it dry.

A word of Caution, don’t smell it, because it absorbs odor!  My poor little fella made the mistake of smelling it and it didn’t smell like roses.  : (

 

The bottom line is always read your labels.  If you use these deodorants don’t swipe too many times.  I know someone that actually swipes 10-20 times per arm pit.  That is going overboard and should be avoided! 

1.  Don’t apply right after you shave, because your pores will be wide open, and will leach into your body quicker.

2.  Don’t apply it before bed, because it will be on you for almost 24 hours. 

3.  Never apply on broken skin

 

I still use these antiperspirant deodorants, but trying to find an all natural one that will block odor and wetness.  When I find a good one, you guys will be the first I tell!

I am doing a “Healthy Review” on Flax USA, they are a leader in the flax industry and provide quality products with consumer convenience in mind.  Stephanie Stober is the President, and CEO of Flax USA, they are a 5th generation family farm in North Dakota.  Their golden flaxseed can be found in over 600 stores along with their newest product, Flaxmilk.  I am going to run to my local supermarket to taste that, it’s all natural, dairy free, soy free, gluten free and kosher.  They offer natural and organic non-GMO flax produced in a Kosher and Gluten-free facility.  Comes in vanilla, original and unsweetened and has 1200 mg of omega-3 per serving. The oils in flaxseed are over 50% alpha linolenic acid (ALA).  This would be a great alternative for vegan’s, and people who cannot tolerate dairy products.

There Ground Golden Flaxseed is one of my favorite products and I highly recommend it due to the many health benefits from these little seeds.  They maybe little, but they offer powerful nutrition for your body!

Flax seed can help prevent cancer, diabetes, cholesterol problems, heart disease, menopausal symptoms, inflammation, arthritis, and constipation.  To get the full benefits, try to consume flax seed every day instead of flax oil, so you can get the benefit of fiber.  Also, it is beneficial to eat the flax seed ground instead of whole because the body is not able to digest the seeds.  That’s why I love Flax USA, it is already ground.  Their company used a cold milled process, gently grinds the seeds without significantly raising the temperature.  This method preserves the nutrients, flavor and extends the shelf life to 22 months.

Flax seed is abundant with lignans which are plant estrogens or phytoestrogens which are an important nutrient for women’s health, vitamins, minerals and protein, as well as Omega 3 and 6.  Flax has at least 75 times more than any other plant food.

One serving of milled flax gives you 2,800 mg of Omega-3, contains 4g of fiber per serving, and only 5g of total fat per serving.

HOW TO USE FLAX

You can add this delicious, golden flax to: Smoothies, cereal, Yogurt, Oatmeal, Juice, Pudding, Muffins, Bread, Cookies, Ice Cream, Salad, Pasta.  This would be great to sneak into your kids foods, the great thing about the golden flax is that it’s hard to detect in food, especially in smoothies.

Instead of using eggs in a recipe, you can substitute them with flax.  Use 1 Tbsp ground flax plus 3 Tbsp water, let sit for 3 minutes.  This will result in a chewier version, with less volume.    You can also substitute flax for fat in recipes using 3 Tbsp ground flax seed for 1 Tbsp of butter, margarine, or oil.  By doing this, your baked goods will brown quicker.

If you have never had flax before, I would recommend that you start with 1 tablespoon the first week, then gradually increase to 2 tablespoons the following week.  This is because some people are not used to a high-fiber diet. Bloating or stomach pain may occur.  Make sure that you drink plenty of water.

I prefer the golden flax because of its pleasant mild nutty flavor.  Brown flax has a stronger taste and you can detect it in food.

Not only is the salt lamp beautiful, but it has a powerhouse of so many health benefits.  Years ago I admired the beautiful lamp, but never purchased it because of it’s hefty price tag, until I saw one at my local Home Goods store.  I got a medium sized one for $9.99 I could not believe my eyes, I bought it and placed it in my living room.

Salt lamps can improve the general atmosphere of a room.  You can do this by placing it next to a TV or a computer.  NEVER place it on TOP of the TV or computer, it will result in being exposed to 20 times higher frequency patterns than your body is used too.  When it’s placed on top of a TV or Computer the electomagnetic field is in approximately the 100-160Hz zone.  The result will be nervousness, insomnia and lack of concentration.  Also there will be more free radicals in the body, known to cause cancer!
